I certainly grew up with prudish values around body & display of body. I remember when I was in Singapore I tried to be more daring with my clothing options. In India I was in the "behan jee" category. So in Singapore I was going through a Rennaissance(spelling?). I bought a skirt that had a slit in the front, but on the left thigh. So when you walked your thigh did a wonderful dance for any lustful eye watching. I came home to visit & decided to wear this skirt because now I was cool & hip. When my father saw me in it he had a moment of ....i don't know what to call it, but basically he asked me if that was what I intended to wear outside, on the streets of Delhi. I asserted- yes! & walked out.
Unfortunately, I lived in the non-posh part of Delhi where Western influence arrived a bit later than South Delhi (the POSH area with much Western influence which reflected in the residents' accents when they spoke English). So North-Delhi didn't encourage young women's wearing of spaghetti straps & tank tops or strap-less. Hence, I wonder if I came to accept a very prudish POV. Because even today when I see a woman in a revealing outfit or body hugging outfit, I cannot help but think "wow! You're so desperate for male attention".
I'm sure in some respect I'm wrong. I don't want to think negatively about someone's intentions. Diversity of dressing styles, I suppose.
So? How did North-Delhi welcome your mini skirt?
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sure men ogled. I think the auto-rickshaw I took..well the driver was looking. And I am sure wondering what kind of a woman I was. But the ogling would have happened regardless of what I wore. The skirt just makes the ogling happen even more.
